    Question

In statistics, which measure of dispersion is not

    affected by extreme values?
A Range Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B Variance Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C Standard Deviation Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D Interquartile Range Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
E Coefficient of Variation Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

    • Measures of dispersion:
      • Range:  (Max - Min). Highly sensitive to extreme values.
      • Variance & Standard Deviation:  Based on squared deviations from the mean. The mean itself is sensitive to outliers, so these measures are also highly affected.
      • Interquartile Range (IQR):  Defined as Q3 - Q1 (the range of the middle 50% of the data). Since it only uses the data between the 25th and 75th percentiles, it completely  ignores the values in the lowest 25% and the highest 25% . This makes it a  robust statistic  that is  resistant to the influence of extreme values or outliers .
