Functional classification of agroforestry systems categorises them based on the primary socio-economic role or objective they serve, such as production-oriented systems aimed at commercial output, protective systems aimed at soil and water conservation or subsistence-oriented systems, as distinct from structural classification, which instead categorises systems based on the physical arrangement and combination of their tree, crop and livestock components.
