कवि' शब्द में जातिवाचक संज्ञा है। जिस शब्द से एक जाति के सभी प्राणियों अथवा वस्तुओं का बोध हो उसे जातिवाचक संज्ञा कहते हैं। जैसे- बच्चा ,जानवर, नदी, अध्यापक, बाजार, पहाड़, खिड़की आदि शब्द एक ही प्रकार प्राणी वस्तु और स्थान का बोध करा रहे हैं, इसलिए यह जातिवाचक संज्ञा है।
