What is the UGC NET Exam?

The University Grants Commission - National Eligibility Test is the national-level examination that determines whether an Indian candidate is eligible for appointment as Assistant Professor (Lectureship) in Indian universities and colleges, and whether they qualify for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to pursue Ph.D. research.

It is one of the most widely attempted competitive exams in the country, and a large number of universities also accept it for direct admission to their Ph.D. programmes.

UGC NET was first conducted back in 1989 by the University Grants Commission itself. Since December 2018, the National Testing Agency (NTA) has taken over the actual conduct of the exam on the UGC’s behalf, running it twice a year, once in a June cycle and once in a December cycle, entirely in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode across designated centres in India.

Its subject code is 58, and any reference to this number in the official notification or admit card refers specifically to the Law paper.

Who Can Appear for UGC NET Law?

Educational Qualification

Candidates need a Master's degree (LL.M. or an equivalent) from a UGC-recognised university, with at least 55% marks, without any rounding off, for General and EWS candidates.

For OBC (Non-Creamy Layer), SC, ST, PwD/PwBD and Third Gender candidates, this minimum requirement drops to 50% marks.

Candidates appearing in the final year of their Master's degree, or whose results are still awaited, are allowed to apply provisionally.

They must, however, complete the Master's degree with the required percentage within two years of the NET result declaration; for candidates applying purely for Ph.D. admission eligibility, this window shrinks to just one year.

Ph.D. holders whose Master’s degree was completed by September 19, 1991, are entitled to a 5% relaxation in marks, meaning 50% instead of the usual 55%.

Separately, candidates who’ve completed a 4-year, 8-semester Bachelor’s degree with at least 75% marks may appear for JRF directly. They are eligible for JRF and Ph.D. admission. They are not eligible for appointment as an Assistant Professor based on that qualification.

However, for Assistant Professor eligibility they would still need to additionally complete a Master's degree with the required percentage. There is no restriction whatsoever on the number of attempts a candidate can make.

Subject Selection

Candidates should appear in the subject matching their post-graduation. For Paper 2 Law, this normally means the LL.M. Candidates whose exact subject title doesn't appear listed in the notification may appear under a closely related subject, provided there's genuine overlap between the two syllabi.

Age Limit and Relaxations

The upper age limit applies to JRF applicants. There is no upper age limit for candidates applying for Assistant Professor eligibility or Ph.D. admission only.

It's important to note that the total age relaxation available under all grounds combined cannot exceed 5 years under any circumstances, no matter how many of the categories above a candidate qualifies under.

What Are the UGC NET Exam Cycles and Application Process?

UGC NET runs twice a year, in a June cycle and a December cycle, and every cycle follows an identical structure: notification, online application, examination, provisional answer key, and result. The timeline below is for the December 2026 cycle.

Application Fee (Per Cycle)

The fee is non-refundable and is paid entirely online through net banking, credit or debit card, UPI, or any other gateway offered by the NTA. Candidates also pay service or processing charges and GST over and above the examination fee. .

How to Apply Online

• Visit ugcnet.nta.nic.in and click on the application link for the current cycle.
• Register with your name, e-mail ID and mobile number to generate an application number and password.
• Fill in the online form, entering personal details, educational qualifications, category, and selecting the subject (Law, Code 58) along with your preferred examination city.

After Applying: Admit Card, Answer Key and Result

The city intimation slip is released a few days before the actual admit card, and the admit card itself must be downloaded from the portal and carried to the exam centre alongside a valid photo ID.

After the exam, the NTA releases a provisional answer key, and candidates get a short challenge window, usually 2 to 3 days, to raise objections against it. The final answer key is then prepared after these objections have been reviewed.

Results are declared with a scorecard and percentile score.
