LIC AAO Legal Exam Pattern — Overview

Each section has its own time limit, and candidates must qualify in all of them to move forward. The marks from this stage are not counted in the final ranking, but it acts as the first filter for shortlisting.

Stage 1: LIC Prelims (AAO Legal)

The preliminary stage of the LIC AAO Legal exam is held online and is objective in nature. It lasts for 60 minutes, with each section having a separate time limit. Candidates must qualify in all sections to advance, and there is a penalty of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.

The test has three sections. The reasoning ability section has 35 questions for 35 marks and must be finished in 20 minutes. The English language section also has 35 questions for 35 marks with 20 minutes to solve them.

The general awareness section has 30 questions for 30 marks, with 20 minutes given to attempt it. However, the marks from general awareness are only qualifying and are not added to the ranking. The total marks counted from prelims are 70.

Shortlisting for the mains exam is based on performance in this stage. LIC selects candidates in a ratio of about 20 times the number of vacancies for each category, depending on availability, ensuring only the best move forward.

LIC AAO Legal Prelims Syllabus

The preliminary examination for the LIC AAO Legal post is the first stage of the selection process. It is designed as a screening test to check a candidate’s reasoning ability, command of English, and general awareness.

Each section is timed separately, and candidates must qualify in all of them to move on to the mains exam. While the English and reasoning sections contribute to the final prelims score, the general awareness section is only qualifying in nature.

Even though its marks are not counted towards ranking, clearing it is compulsory. The overall focus of this stage is to test quick thinking, language skills, and awareness of current issues before moving to the more subject-specific mains examination.

Stage 2: LIC Mains (AAO Legal)

The mains stage of the LIC AAO Legal exam is conducted online in a single sitting and is divided into objective and descriptive parts. The objective test carries 150 marks and the descriptive test also carries 150 marks.

There is no negative marking at this stage. The descriptive papers begin immediately after the objective test but are evaluated only for those candidates who qualify in the objective part. Candidates are required to pass each section separately as well as the overall aggregate to move ahead.

In the objective paper, candidates answer 30 questions in reasoning ability for 30 marks within 20 minutes, 20 questions in general awareness with a focus on insurance and financial markets for 20 marks within 10 minutes, and 50 questions in professional legal knowledge for 100 marks within 30 minutes.

The descriptive paper follows, where candidates must answer 4 out of 6 questions on legal knowledge for 50 marks in 60 minutes, and these marks are scaled to 150 for the merit list.

There is also an English descriptive paper of 2 questions worth 25 marks in 30 minutes, which tests communication skills through tasks like emails, reports, précis, and situation analysis. However, the English descriptive paper is qualifying in nature and not counted for the ranking.

LIC AAO Legal Mains Syllabus

The mains examination is the most decisive stage of the LIC AAO Legal recruitment process. Unlike prelims, this stage directly counts toward the final merit and tests candidates in depth.

It combines both objective and descriptive papers, ensuring that knowledge, accuracy, and presentation skills are all evaluated. The objective test checks reasoning, financial and insurance awareness, and professional legal knowledge, with the legal section carrying the most weight.

The descriptive part follows immediately after and includes professional legal questions as well as tasks in English communication such as reports, précis, and emails. Candidates must clear each section and also secure the minimum overall marks to move forward to the interview round.

Stage 3: Interview & Medical

The final stage of the LIC AAO Legal recruitment is the interview and medical examination. Candidates are called for the interview based on their mains examination rank and category.

To be considered in the final merit list, they must secure at least the minimum qualifying marks set by LIC. The interview is an important step, as it assesses overall suitability for the role beyond academic knowledge, including communication and judgment skills.

LIC AAO Legal Preliminary Exam Marking Scheme

The prelims carry a total of 100 questions. Each correct answer is awarded 1 mark, but only 70 marks are counted for merit. The general awareness section, worth 30 marks, is qualifying in nature and not included in the ranking.

A penalty of 0.25 marks is applied for every wrong answer. Candidates must clear each section separately as well as the overall cutoff to qualify for mains.

LIC AAO Legal Mains Exam Marking Scheme

The mains are far more weighty since they directly contribute to the merit list. The objective test carries 150 marks across reasoning, general awareness, and professional legal knowledge.

Unlike prelims, there is no negative marking. Candidates must qualify in each section and in the aggregate.

The descriptive papers follow immediately after the objective test. The legal descriptive test is marked out of 50 but is scaled to 150 for merit ranking.

The English descriptive paper carries 25 marks but is only qualifying in nature, meaning its score does not add to the final total.

LIC AAO Legal Interview Marking Scheme

The interview carries a maximum of 60 marks. Candidates must secure a minimum of 30 marks (for UR, OBC, and EWS) or 27 marks (for SC, ST, and PwBD). Marks from the mains and interview together form the final merit list.

LIC AAO Legal Exam Language

The LIC AAO Legal exam is conducted entirely in online mode, and candidates are given the choice of language depending on the paper.

In both the preliminary and mains examinations, the reasoning ability and general awareness sections are available in English and Hindi, allowing candidates to attempt these in the language they are most comfortable with.

However, the English language paper in prelims and the English descriptive paper in mains are conducted in English only, since they are designed to test communication skills.

Similarly, the Professional Knowledge (Legal) papers, both objective and descriptive, are offered in English and Hindi, ensuring fairness for candidates across different regions.
