Question
A train with 8 compartments of equal length takes 18
seconds to cross a pole and 24 seconds to cross a 150-metre-long platform. If 4 compartments of the train are removed, then how long would it take to cross a pole?Solution
Let the original length of the train = ‘d’ metres
Then, distance covered by the train in 18 seconds = ‘d’ metres
Distance covered by the train in 24 seconds = (d + 150) metres
So, distance covered in (24 – 18) = 6 seconds = (d + 150 – d) = 150 metres
So, speed of the train = 150 ÷ 6 = 25 m/s
So, original length of the train = 25 × 18 = 450 metres
After removing 4 compartments, length of the train = 450 × (4/8) = 225 metres
So, required time taken = 225 ÷ 25 = 9 seconds
