Question
Ratio of number of book to number of pen sold by a
shopkeeper is 13:8, respectively, while ratio of number of pen to number of pencil sold by the same shopkeeper is 4:13, respectively. If price of each book, each pen and each pencil is Rs. 40, Rs. 20, and Rs. 10 respectively then revenue generated by shopkeeper is Rs. 20680. Find the number of pen sold by shopkeeper.Solution
Given: Books : Pens = 13 : 8 Pens : Pencils = 4 : 13 Let Books = 13k and Pens = 8k Also, Pens = 4m and Pencils = 13m Equate Pens: 8k = 4m m = 2k So Pencils = 13m = 13(2k) = 26k Now revenue: Revenue = 40(B) + 20(P) + 10(C) = 40(13k) + 20(8k) + 10(26k) = 520k + 160k + 260k = 940k Given revenue = 20680: 940k = 20680 k = 20680 / 940 = 22 Pens sold: P = 8k = 8 × 22 = 176
