Question
The following questions each present two quantities,
Quantity I and Quantity II. Compare the values of the two quantities and determine their relationship. A train P covers a 400 m platform in 15 seconds and crosses a tree in 9 seconds. Quantity I: Determine the time required for Train Q, which has a length of 300 m, to cross a platform equal in length to Train P. The speed of Train Q is 54 km/h. Quantity II: Determine the time required for Train M to pass a 300 m platform, given that Train M’s length is 200 m shorter than Train P, and its speed is 36 km/h.Solution
ATQ, Let the length of train P is 'x' m According to the question, (x+400)/15 = x/9 5x = 3x+1200 2x = 1200 x = 600 Length of train P = 600 m Quantity I: Speed of train Q = 54×(5/18) = 15 m/sec Required time taken = (300+600)/15 = 60 sec Quantity II: Length if the train M = 600-200 = 400m Length of the platform = 300m Speed of train M = 36×(5/18) = 10 m/sec Required time taken = 700/10 = 70 sec
