Question
A school's enrollment of students increased by 10% in
2015, another 20% in 2016, and then decreased by 30% in 2017. If the percentage of students receiving scholarships was 25% in 2015 and increased to 40% in 2017, calculate the percentage change in the number of scholarship students.Solution
ATQ, Let the enrollment in 2015 be 800 students. In 2016, enrollment = 1.10×800=880. In 2017, enrollment = 1.20×880=1056. In 2017, enrollment decreased by 30% = 0.70×1056=739.2. Scholarship students in 2015 = 0.25×800=200. Scholarship students in 2017 = 0.40×739.2=295.68. Percentage change in scholarship students = {(295.68−200)/200}×100% = 47.84%. Therefore, the number of scholarship students increased by 47.84% from 2015 to 2017.
