Question
In an examination, the number of those who have passed
and the number of those who failed were in the ratio of 40 : 7. If 7 more had appeared and the number of failures was 8 less than earlier, the ratio of passers to failures would have been 35 : 4. Then find the original total number of students who appeared at the examination.Solution
Let number of passed students = 40x & that of failure students = 7x So total number of students = 40x+7x = 47x After admitting 7 more students, Total Students appeared = 47x+7 New Failure students = 7x-8 then new passed students = 47x+7 - (7x-8) = 40x+15 So ratio of new passed to new failure students = (40x+15) /(7x-8) = 35/4 160x + 60 = 245x - 280 85x = 340 x = 4 Total students appeared in the exam was = 47 × 4 = 188
