    Question

A mixture contains milk and water in the ratio 3:4,

respectively. If half of the mixture is replaced with 6 litres of water, then the resultant mixture will contain milk and water in the ratio 2:3, respectively. Find the original quantity of the mixture.
A 140 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 168 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 126 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 96 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
E 180 litres Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

    Solution

Since, the ratio of the milk and water in the remaining mixture (when half of the mixture is taken out) will be same as initially. So, let quantity of milk and water in the remaining mixture be ‘3x’ litres and ‘4x’ litres, respectively. ATQ; 3x : (4x + 6) = 2 : 3 Or, 9x = 8x + 18 Or, x = 18 So, original quantity of mixture = (7 × 18) / 0.50 = 168 litres
