Let the initial quantities of alcohol and water be 5x and 3x respectively. After adding 4 liters of water, the quantity of water becomes 3x+4, and the new ratio is 5:7. 
Cross-multiply and solve:
7(5x) = 5(3x + 4) 35x = 15x + 20 20x = 20 x = 1
Thus, the initial quantity of the mixture is 5x + 3x = 8x = 8 liters.
