      Question

15 liters are drawn from a cask full of wine and then

filled with water. This operation is performed two more times. The ratio of the quantity of wine now left in the cask to that of the water is 8:27. How much wine did the cask hold originally
A 45liter Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
B 36liter Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
C 27liter Correct Answer Incorrect Answer
D 54liter Correct Answer Incorrect Answer

      Solution

      Let the quantity of the wine in the cask originally be x liters. Then, quantity of wine left in cask after 3 operations = [x {1 - (15/x)}3] liters Therefore, [x {1 - (15/x)}3 /x] = 8/27  [1 - (15/x)}2] = (2/3)3 x = 45 The original quantity of cask = 45 liters
