Question
A vessel contains mixture of milk and water mixed
in the ratio 6:5, respectively. 66 litres of the mixture is replaced with 20 litres of water such that the quantities of milk and water in the resultant mixture become equal. Find the initial quantity of mixture in the vessel.Solution
Let the initial quantities of milk and water in the vessel be 6x litres and 5x litres respectively.
66 litres mixture contains 36 litres milk and 30 litres water.
According to question:
6x – 36 = 5x – 30 + 20
x = 26
So the initial quantity of mixture = 11 × 26 = 286 litres
