Question
The speed of boat ‘M’ in still water is double the
speed of boat ‘N’. The two boats are 360 km apart on a river and move towards each other at the same time. If they meet after 6 hours, what is the speed of boat ‘N’ in still water?Solution
ATQ,
Let the still water speed of boat ‘N’ = ‘y’ km/h
Then, still water speed of boat ‘M’ = 2 × y = ‘2y’ km/h
Let stream speed = ‘x’ km/h
Effective relative speed = 2y + y = ‘3y’ km/h
So, 3y = 360 ÷ 6 = 60
y = 60 ÷ 3 = 20
Speed of boat ‘N’ in still water = 20 km/h
