As per s.14 of the Coal Bearing Areas, Acquisition and Development Act, 1957 the amount of compensation payable to land owners is fixed by agreement or if no agreement is present it is fixed by a Tribunal constituted by the Central Government. The presiding officer of the Tribunal is / has been / be qualified equivalent to be a judge of the High Court.
