    The largest bank, and the oldest still in existence, is theĀ State Bank of IndiaĀ (S.B.I). It originated as theĀ Bank of CalcuttaĀ in June 1806. In 1809, it was renamed as theĀ Bank of Bengal. This was one of the three banks funded by aĀ presidency government, the other two were theĀ Bank of BombayĀ in 1840 and theĀ Bank of MadrasĀ in 1843.Ā
