Recently, PM Modi visited Lumbini, Nepal on the occasion of Buddha Jayanti. In the Buddhist tradition, Lumbini is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha. PM Modi along with his Nepali counterpart laid down the foundation stone for the India International Center for Buddhist Culture and Heritage in the Lumbini Monastic Zone.
The Center seeks to challenge the prevalence of the Chinese sponsorship and patronage of Buddhist festivals and institutions in the area. It could also be a sign of a focused development of the area into a tourist and chub for pilgrims and other visitors. To that end, PMs visit was welcomed by his Nepali counterpart. Moreover, this meeting also led to the signing of a few MoUs.
