Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, modern-day Gujarat. Back then, Porbandar was part of the Kathiawar Agency during the British Raj. <\/strong>This day is marked as an official holiday in India and is observed in all states and union territories. This year will mark Gandhiji\u2019s 152nd<\/sup> birth anniversary.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Brief Timeline of Gandhi’s Life<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Gandhi is not only India\u2019s but one of the world\u2019s greatest social and political thinkers and activists of the 20th<\/sup> century. Such was his life and such were his deeds that he earned the title of the \u2018Mahatma.\u2019 He is known as the \u2018Father of the Nation<\/strong>\u2019 in India and lovingly referred to as \u2018Bapu<\/strong>.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let us look at a brief timeline of Gandhi’s illustrious life and how he touched millions of lives through his work and his words. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

  • 1869- <\/strong>Gandhi was born in Porbandar on October 2.<\/li>
  • 1883- <\/strong>Gandhi married Kasturba<\/li>
  • 1887- <\/strong>He completed his schooling<\/li>
  • 1888- <\/strong>Gandhi left for London to study Law<\/li>
  • 1891- <\/strong>Gandhi returned to India after completing his studies<\/li>
  • 1893- <\/strong>He left for South Africa to practice Law<\/li>
  • 1915- <\/strong>Gandhi returned to India for good and joined the Indian National Congress<\/li>
  • 1918-<\/strong> Gandhi\u2019s first \u201cfast unto death\u201d in India in Ahmedabad Mill Strike<\/li>
  • 1919- <\/strong>Jallianwala Bagh massacre<\/li>
  • 1920- <\/strong>Gandhi launched the Non-Cooperation Movement<\/li>
  • 1922- <\/strong>Chauri Chaura incident and the retraction of the Non-Cooperation Movement due to breach of Gandhi\u2019s ahimsa<\/em> policy<\/li>
  • 1930- <\/strong>Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram and the launch of the Civil Disobedience Movement<\/li>
  • 1931- <\/strong>Gandhi-Irwin Pact<\/li>
  • 1932- <\/strong>Gandhi\u2019s fast against the Communal Awards<\/li>
  • 1942- <\/strong>Quit India Movement was launched. Gandhi gave the call to \u201cdo or die\u201d<\/li>
  • 1947- <\/strong>India won independence from the British<\/li>
  • 1948- <\/strong>Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n

    International Day of Non-Violence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    On October 2, the International Day of Non-Violence is also observed annually. The day honours Gandhiji\u2019s contribution toward the Indian Freedom Movement and his tireless efforts toward making non-violence the mainstay of struggles and rebellions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    What is Non-Violence?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Non-violence is the philosophy of refusing physical violence under any circumstance or any sort of provocation to achieve socio-political change. It is also known as non-violent resistance. Rather than using physical force or violence, non-violent resistance makes use of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    1. Peaceful protest and persuasion <\/li>
    2. Civil non-cooperation<\/li>
    3. Non-violent demonstrations like strikes and fasts<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      History of the International Day of Non-Violence <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      In 2005, Shirin Ebadi, Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Laureate moved the United Nations to observe October 2, as International Day of Non-Violence to honour Gandhiji. In a resolution passed in June 2007, the UN marked this day and since then, October 2 is celebrated as the day for non-violence all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      The importance of the day lies in how we use it. This day is dedicated to not only honouring Gandhi\u2019s memory and legacy but to acknowledging that non-violence is a proven and successful method of protest and subsequent change. Therefore, we must use this day to create more dialogue to solve the world\u2019s present problems and introduce change using non-violent methods.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

      Mahatma Gandhi and Ahimsa<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

      Mahatma Gandhi followed and largely popularized the policy and philosophy of ahimsa. His belief was that; \u201cAn eye for eye makes the whole world blind<\/em><\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

      He embodied the philosophy of ahimsa and through his practical actions paved the way for thousands to come who would live their lives following the Mahatma\u2019s principles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
