Such was his life and such were his deeds that he earned the title of the \u2018Mahatma.\u2019 He is known as the \u2018<strong>Father of the Nation<\/strong>\u2019 in India and lovingly referred to as \u2018<strong>Bapu<\/strong>.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us look at a brief timeline of Gandhi&#8217;s illustrious life and how he touched millions of lives through his work and his words.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>1869- <\/strong>Gandhi was born in Porbandar on October 2.<\/li><li><strong>1883- <\/strong>Gandhi married Kasturba<\/li><li><strong>1887- <\/strong>He completed his schooling<\/li><li><strong>1888- <\/strong>Gandhi left for London to study Law<\/li><li><strong>1891- <\/strong>Gandhi returned to India after completing his studies<\/li><li><strong>1893- <\/strong>He left for South Africa to practice Law<\/li><li><strong>1915- <\/strong>Gandhi returned to India for good and joined the Indian National Congress<\/li><li><strong>1918-<\/strong> Gandhi\u2019s first \u201cfast unto death\u201d in India in Ahmedabad Mill Strike<\/li><li><strong>1919- <\/strong>Jallianwala Bagh massacre<\/li><li><strong>1920- <\/strong>Gandhi launched the Non-Cooperation Movement<\/li><li><strong>1922- <\/strong>Chauri Chaura incident and the retraction of the Non-Cooperation Movement due to breach of Gandhi\u2019s <em>ahimsa<\/em> policy<\/li><li><strong>1930- <\/strong>Dandi March from Sabarmati Ashram and the launch of the Civil Disobedience Movement<\/li><li><strong>1931- <\/strong>Gandhi-Irwin Pact<\/li><li><strong>1932- <\/strong>Gandhi\u2019s fast against the Communal Awards<\/li><li><strong>1942- <\/strong>Quit India Movement was launched. Gandhi gave the call to \u201cdo or die\u201d<\/li><li><strong>1947- <\/strong>India won independence from the British<\/li><li><strong>1948- <\/strong>Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuram Godse<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>International Day of Non-Violence<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>On October 2, the International Day of Non-Violence is also observed annually. The day honours Gandhiji\u2019s contribution toward the Indian Freedom Movement and his tireless efforts toward making non-violence the mainstay of struggles and rebellions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is Non-Violence?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Ahimsa Paramo Dharma<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Non-violence is the philosophy of refusing physical violence under any circumstance or any sort of provocation to achieve socio-political change. It is also known as non-violent resistance. Rather than using physical force or violence, non-violent resistance makes use of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Peaceful protest and persuasion&nbsp;<\/li><li>Civil non-cooperation<\/li><li>Non-violent demonstrations like strikes and fasts<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>History of the International Day of Non-Violence&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2005, Shirin Ebadi, Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Laureate moved the United Nations to observe October 2, as International Day of Non-Violence to honour Gandhiji. In a resolution passed in June 2007, the UN marked this day and since then, October 2 is celebrated as the day for non-violence all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>International Day of Non-Violence Significance<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The importance of the day lies in how we use it. This day is dedicated to not only honouring Gandhi\u2019s memory and legacy but to acknowledging that non-violence is a proven and successful method of protest and subsequent change. Therefore, we must use this day to create more dialogue to solve the world\u2019s present problems and introduce change using non-violent methods.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Mahatma Gandhi and Ahimsa<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahatma Gandhi followed and largely popularized the policy and philosophy of ahimsa.
