Why is International Women\u2019s Day celebrated? <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every year we celebrate 8<\/strong>th<\/sup><\/strong> March<\/strong> as INTERNATIONAL\nWOMEN\u2019S DAY<\/strong> with a vow to provide a safe and secure environment and\nequality in all spheres. International Women\u2019s Day is celebrated with a\nresolution to commemorate women achievements, to acknowledge the special status\nthey deserve in society. International Women\u2019s Day is a global celebration of\nwomen’s achievement in the social, economic, cultural and\npolitical sphere. The Women’s Day celebration<\/strong> objective is to embrace\nevery culture and ethnicity of appreciation, respect and love towards women<\/strong>. This year too\nwomen\u2019s day will be celebrated with the theme- I am Generation Equality:\nRealizing Women\u2019s Rights, thus<\/strong> marking a call to\naction for accelerating gender equality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

International Women\u2019s Day Origin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

International Women\u2019s Day celebration traces back to February 1908, when\nthousands of garment women workers went on strike and marched through New York\nCity to protest against their working conditions and environment. To honour the\nanniversary of those strikes, a National Women\u2019s Day was celebrated on Feb. 28,\n1909, for the first time in the U.S., by the Socialist Party of America.\nThe idea to turn the day into an international movement advocating universal\nsuffrage was impetus by German<\/strong>\ncampaigner, revolutionary and socialist Clara\nZetkin<\/strong> in 1910, at the International Conference of Working Women. Ever\nsince, this day has been celebrated as International Women’s Day or\nInternational Working Women’s Day by the socialist movement and communist\ncountries until it was adopted by the feminist movement in 1967. The United\nNations started celebrating International Women\u2019s Day in 1975.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women Status in Society<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

With the passage of time, women’s status has undergone multidimensional\nchanges, in an alternate fashion form revered status in the pre-Vedic period,\nas a pariah during post-Vedic\/Medieval Period to strongly independent dynamic\ngender in the present scenario and is still on her journey. Worship of\nGoddesses depicts the respect women had in society. Indian Government\ncelebrated 2001 as the year of women empowerment<\/strong>. National policy to\nempower women was also passed in 2001. On March 9, 2010, Rajya Sabha passed the\nWomen’s Reservation Bill, ensuring 33% reservation to women in State\nLegislative Bodies and Parliament. All these beautiful data decipher, the\nstatus of women has changed but still, a lot has to be done for their\nempowerment. Child marriage, eve-teasing, harassment, exploitation,\ndeteriorating maternity rate, anaemic pregnancies, molestation, rape,\ntrafficking etc. are impediments in their empower journey which is still\nprevailing at an alarming rate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indian Government Steps to Empower Women <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Women are not a sign of weakness. Her soft and tender heart and cold\nblood (patience) is not a sign of delicacy. From giving birth to a child, she\nis now walking hand in hand with men and even conquering jobs that were solely\nfelt to be men\u2019s dominating field. The world has realized that no nation can\nprogress if women lack behind because they are the backbone and real architect\nof society. The Indian Government is also working to provide various platforms\nand opportunities to empower women. Women’s issues and their contribution to\nthe country’s economy has been realized so the Central Government is working on\nvarious parameters for gender equality.
