They are ecosystems with plants and animals of scientific and natural interest. In a Biosphere Reserve, protection is granted not only to the flora and fauna of the protected region but also to human communities who inhabit these regions, and their ways of life. Biosphere Reserves are nominated by national governments. They remain under the sovereign jurisdiction of the states where they are located and are internationally recognized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Zones of Biosphere Reserves<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Biosphere Reserves consist of three interrelated zones which are given below-<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/pmPIy0snT0opjYk0UI4D-iniwQvd2OiGxrE1Rl6rqjoEAYfhSQ3Lb9Djbc7e7gAMQh8j512l8q49SCarRB51G49OJIib-SkA0wqMXDONTwVZfLQ6bxFb2yH7E3-OcUfDwd3SGm2U\" alt=\"\" width=\"551\" height=\"279\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Core Zone-<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>This zone is the innermost undisturbed ecosystem.&nbsp;<\/li><li>It is a strictly protected area or ecosystem that contributes to the landscapes, species conservation and genetic variation.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Buffer Zone-<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It surrounds the core zone and used for activities compatible with sound ecological practices.<\/li><li>Only research and education activities are permitted to humans. These activities should not obstruct the conservation objectives of the core area.&nbsp;<\/li><li>It includes restoration, limited tourism, fishing, grazing, etc; which are permitted to reduce its effect on the core zone.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Human activities are less intensive in this zone as compared to the transition zone.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Transition Zone-&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It is the outermost zone and open to human activities that are socio-culturally and ecologically sustainable.<\/li><li>Peripheral area of a biosphere reserve <\/li><li>Zone of cooperation where human ventures and conservation are done in harmony.<\/li><li>Cropping, recreation, forestry, and human settlements are permitted.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Trivia<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>There are 18 Biosphere Reserves in India. Of these, 12 are part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.<\/li><li><strong>First BR: <\/strong>Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve (1986) in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka<\/li><li><strong>Largest BR:<\/strong> Gulf of Kachch in Gujarat <\/li><li><strong>Smallest BR<\/strong>: Dibru-Saikhowa in Assam.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>NUMBER OF BIOSPHERE RESERVES ALL OVER THE WORLD&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Presently there exist 727 biosphere reserves spreading across 131 countries, including 21 transboundary sites. The distribution of biosphere reserves all over the world is given below-<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>86 sites in Africa<\/li><li>35 sites in the Arab States<\/li><li>168 sites in in Asia and the Pacific<\/li><li>306 sites in Europe and North America<\/li><li>132 sites in Latin America and the Caribbean.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Important Biosphere Reserve in India&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/V-7nANttLN0_lohiBhDmiMFyItvVnPh9XOnJb2IF2M27g7UW1wJHwtRuGaXSDMGmIJidrE9sOUFdlZ5x688AMpohU2jduGUlhlnHUtXL74LDVO3NwrSxFMhHqFW7u7r6sozqJtdV\" alt=\"\" width=\"470\" height=\"264\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is included in the list of World Natural Heritage Sites. It is located in parts of Tamil Nadu, Kerala and&nbsp; Karnataka combined. It got the designation of a&nbsp; biosphere reserve by UNESCO in the year 2000. It is located in the state of Tamil Nadu (the Indian part of the Gulf of Mannar).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the Large shallow forming part of the Laccadive Sea in the Indian Ocean with a least depth of 5.8 m (19 ft). Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park was designated as a biosphere reserve in 2001 by UNESCO.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Simlipal Biosphere Reserve&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Simplipal Biosphere Reserve is located in Mayurbhanj district, Odisha. The biosphere reserve has the largest zone of Sal in all over India. It is a part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 2009. Panna Biosphere Reserve is situated in the Vindhya mountain range in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh. The decision to include it in the UNESCO list of Biosphere Reserves was taken at the International Coordination Council meeting of the UN held virtually in 2020.
